The blues musician Lillian Standfield thought that Austin needed a slogan to promote music after returning home from a gig in Houston and seeing the city limits sign in 1991.

She originally suggested "Music Capital of the World" to the City of Austin Music Commission. When the city researched the idea they found that Austin has more live music venues per capita than cities like Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Las Vegas or New York City.

Some on the council suggested "The Live Music Capital of the Universe".
Eventually, "The Live Music Capital of the World" won out to become Austin Tx official slogan and was adopted by the city council on August 29, 1991.

There are over 200 live music venues in Austin with thousands of musicians living in the area. On any given night, listeners can find a number of choices for live music.

SXSW and Austin City Limits music festival are huge events in the Austin area.
